For many travellers, the Turkey e-visa is the first piece of Turkish bureaucracy they meet, and also the easiest. You fill in a form online, pay by card and get a PDF by email, often within minutes. Still, every month we talk to people who paid three times the official fee on a copycat website, or who arrived on an e-visa expecting to start university or a job with it

This guide explains who needs an e-visa in 2026–27, how to apply on the official system, what it allows and what it does not, and how it connects to residence permits if you plan to stay longer

At a glance: Apply only on the official site, evisa.gov.tr • Usually valid for 180 days with stays of 30 or 90 days depending on nationality • For tourism and business visits, not for study or work • Some nationalities get a conditional e-visa that needs a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit

What the Turkey e-visa is

The e-visa is an electronic visa issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It replaced the old sticker visa sold at airport counters, which is no longer available for most travellers. You print the PDF or keep it on your phone, and the border officer checks it against your passport at entry

It is a visitor visa. It covers tourism, visiting family, attending meetings and conferences, and short medical trips. It does not let you study at a Turkish university, take up employment or settle. Those purposes need a consulate visa or a residence permit

Who needs an e-visa and who is exempt

Turkey divides countries into three broad groups. Citizens of many European countries, the UK, and since early 2024 the US and Canada, can enter visa-free for tourism, usually for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A second group can get a standard e-visa online. A third group must apply at a Turkish consulate, sometimes with a conditional e-visa option

Category Examples (check the official list) What you do
Visa-free entry Most EU states, UK, US, Canada, Gulf states Travel with a valid passport
Standard e-visa Several countries in Asia, the Caribbean and elsewhere Apply on evisa.gov.tr before travel
Conditional e-visa Nationals such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt in many cases Need a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or permit
Consulate visa Nationalities not eligible for e-visa, or other purposes Apply at a Turkish consulate

These lists change. Agreements are signed, age rules for some nationalities are adjusted, and exemptions come and go. Always check your nationality on evisa.gov.tr or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website a few weeks before you book flights

Conditional e-visa rules

If your country is in the conditional group, the system usually asks for a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen country, the US, the UK or Ireland. Electronic visas from those countries are generally not accepted. Some nationalities must also hold a hotel reservation and a return ticket, and may be required to fly with specific carriers. If you can’t meet these conditions, go to the consulate route instead

How to apply on evisa.gov.tr step by step

  1. Open evisa.gov.tr directly, typing the address yourself rather than clicking an ad
  2. Select your country of travel document, the document type and your arrival date
  3. Answer the eligibility questions, for example about supporting visas if you are in the conditional group
  4. Enter your passport details exactly as printed, including middle names
  5. Pay the fee with a Mastercard, Visa or UnionPay card
  6. Download the e-visa PDF and keep both a printed and a digital copy

Most applications are approved almost instantly. The system lets you apply up to three months before travel, and we suggest doing it at least a week ahead so there is time to fix any problem

Saya tip: Search results are full of “Turkey visa” agencies with official-looking designs. They submit the same form and add a large service fee. The only government site ends in .gov.tr, and you can check the fee for your nationality there before paying anything

Fees, validity and length of stay

The fee depends on your nationality and is shown in US dollars before you pay. For most countries it is a modest amount, but it varies widely, and a few nationalities pay much more because of reciprocity. Don’t trust a figure from an old forum post

A typical e-visa is valid for 180 days from your chosen arrival date. Inside that window you can stay 30 or 90 days depending on your nationality, either in one trip or across several entries if your visa is multiple-entry. Your passport generally needs to stay valid for at least 60 days beyond the end of your allowed stay, and many airlines prefer six months

What you cannot do on an e-visa

This is where people get into trouble. An e-visa does not allow you to work, even remotely for a Turkish company. Employment needs a work permit approved by the Ministry of Labour. It also does not let you enrol on a degree programme. Students need a student visa and student residence permit, which are applied for separately

Remote workers with foreign income sometimes come on an e-visa and then switch status. If that sounds like you, read our guide to the Turkish digital nomad programme before you travel

Staying longer: from e-visa to residence permit

If you want to stay beyond your 30 or 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit through e-ikamet before your e-visa stay runs out. The most common option is the short-term residence permit for purposes such as property ownership or family ties. Once the application is submitted, you can remain while it is reviewed

Overstaying is expensive. Fines are calculated by nationality and length of overstay, and longer overstays can lead to entry bans that last months or years. A few days late at the airport is not just a small inconvenience

E-visa for medical and business travellers

Many of our clients come to Turkey for treatment, from dental work to hair transplants. An e-visa normally covers this, and you should carry the clinic’s appointment letter in case border officers ask. For longer treatments, a medical-purpose residence permit is possible. Our page on health tourism in Turkey explains how treatment trips are usually planned

Business visitors attending meetings, trade fairs or company registration appointments can also use the e-visa. Signing a contract is fine, but working for a Turkish employer is not

Common mistakes at the border

We see the same problems repeatedly. A passport renewed after the e-visa was issued, so the numbers don’t match. A typo in the birth date. A traveller in the conditional group whose Schengen visa expired a week before the trip. Double-check every detail against your passport the day you apply, and again before flying

A simple next step: check your nationality on the official site today, note the fee and stay length, and if you are planning to study, work or settle, contact our team before buying tickets so we can set up the right visa from the start
