If you live in Turkey legally, or you are a Turkish citizen, your spouse and children can usually join you with a family residence permit. The permit is linked to the sponsor’s status and income, so preparation is important. This guide explains who qualifies, the income rule and how to apply in 2027.

At a glance: Sponsor: a Turkish citizen or a foreigner with a valid residence permit (with additional conditions) • Family members: spouse, minor children and dependent children • Income: at least the minimum wage in total, and not less than one third of the minimum wage per family member • Valid health insurance for all family members • Granted for up to 3 years at a time, not beyond the sponsor’s permit.

Who Can Be a Sponsor?

Sponsors can be Turkish citizens, people with certain special status under Turkish law, or foreigners holding a residence permit in Turkey. Foreign sponsors generally need to have lived in Turkey on a residence permit for at least one year (some groups, such as certain students, follow specific rules). Work permits and some other statuses can also serve as the basis for sponsoring family members.

How the Income Requirement Works in Practice

The income rule is the part of the Turkey family residence permit that most often causes problems. Two tests apply at the same time: the household’s total monthly income must not be less than the minimum wage, and it must not be less than one third of the minimum wage for each family member. In practice, this means a larger family needs a higher total income than a couple.

Because the Turkish minimum wage is reviewed regularly, the amount you need can change from one year to the next. Always calculate it using the minimum wage in force when you apply, not the figure from a previous application.

The authorities want to see income that is regular and can be documented. Depending on your situation, evidence may include payslips and social security records, employment contracts, company accounts, pension statements, rental income or bank statements showing regular deposits. A large one-off deposit just before the appointment is usually less persuasive than a steady history. If your income comes from abroad, make sure the documents are clear, recent and translated where required. The migration office can ask for further evidence, so keep originals ready.

Tip: Prepare an income summary sheet listing each source, the monthly amount and the supporting document, so the officer can check your figures quickly. If your income is close to the threshold, get advice before you apply rather than after a refusal.

Common Reasons Applications Are Delayed or Refused

Most problems with family permits are about documents rather than eligibility. Check that you are not making one of these mistakes:

  • Unlegalised or untranslated certificates. Marriage and birth certificates usually need an apostille or consular legalisation, plus a Turkish translation that is notarised.
  • Income that cannot be proven or falls below the threshold once every family member is counted.
  • Insurance gaps. Health insurance must cover each family member, and its term should match the permit period requested.
  • Address issues. The family must be registered at a suitable address, and some neighbourhoods are closed to new foreign residents.
  • Sponsor’s permit about to expire. Because family permits cannot run beyond the sponsor’s own permit, renew the sponsor’s permit first if it is close to expiry.
  • More than one spouse. Turkish law only allows one spouse to receive a family residence permit.

Renewals and Changes in Family Circumstances

A family residence permit is not permanent. Apply for renewal through e-ikamet before the current permit expires, using up-to-date income, insurance and address documents. Late applications can create gaps in legal residence, which may affect future applications.

Life changes also matter. When a child turns 18, or if a marriage ends, the family member may need to switch to another permit type. Turkish law provides routes for children who reach adulthood and for divorced spouses to move to a short-term residence permit if they meet certain conditions, including a minimum period of family residence. Special protection rules apply to spouses who are victims of domestic violence. Because these provisions are detailed, check the current rules with the Presidency of Migration Management or a licensed immigration lawyer as soon as your circumstances change.

Tips for Your Migration Office Appointment

  • Arrive early with the sponsor, all family members who must attend, and both originals and copies of every document.
  • Print the e-ikamet application forms and fee receipts and keep them in the order listed on the form.
  • Bring proof of address registration and your rental contract or title deed.
  • Make sure names are spelled identically on passports, certificates, translations and insurance policies; small differences can cause delays.
  • Keep your phone reachable after the appointment in case the office asks for additional documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can family members work with a family residence permit?

Not automatically. Family members need a work permit to work, although some rules make it easier for spouses.

Can children go to school in Turkey?

Yes. Children with residence permits can attend state or private schools.

How long is the permit valid?

Up to three years at a time, and never longer than the sponsor’s own permit.

Can I sponsor my parents with a family residence permit?

Generally no. The family residence permit covers spouses and children. Parents usually need to apply for a different permit, such as a short-term residence permit, under their own conditions.

Can I apply for a family residence permit from inside Turkey?

Yes, if your family members are in Turkey legally, they can apply online through e-ikamet. Family members abroad can apply through a Turkish consulate in their country of residence.

What happens to my family’s permits if my own permit ends?

Family permits depend on the sponsor’s status, so they can be ended if your permit expires or is cancelled. Renew on time and get advice, for example through a free consultation with Saya Group, if your status is about to change.
