The YÖS exam (the foreign student exam used by Turkish universities) worries many international applicants. The good news is that it is not compulsory for everyone. Thousands of students start their degree in Turkey every year without YÖS, using their high school diploma and GPA or an international exam score instead. This guide explains which universities accept you without YÖS, what they ask for, and how to apply for the 2027 intake.

At a glance: Most private (foundation) universities admit international students with a high school diploma and GPA • Many state universities accept SAT, ACT, IB, A-levels or national exam results instead of YÖS • Scholarships of 25%–100% are still available without YÖS at private universities.

Is YÖS Mandatory to Study in Turkey?

No. YÖS is one of several admission routes, not a national requirement for every university. Each university decides how it selects international students. In practice there are three groups:

  • Private universities: the majority admit you based on your high school diploma, grade average and sometimes an interview. No YÖS is needed.
  • State universities: usually ask for an exam score. Many accept a university-run YÖS, the central TR-YÖS, or international alternatives such as SAT, ACT, IB, A-levels or some national university entrance exams.
  • Highly competitive programmes (medicine and dentistry at top state universities): almost always require a strong exam score.

If you are not sure what YÖS involves, read our guide: What Is the YOS Exam?

Route 1: Private Universities With Your Diploma and GPA

Private universities in Istanbul, Ankara and other cities run their own international admissions. They look mainly at your high school results and, for English-taught programmes, your English level. Typical requirements:

  • A completed high school diploma (or expected graduation for conditional offers).
  • A minimum grade average set by each university and programme; health sciences such as medicine, dentistry and pharmacy require higher grades.
  • Proof of English (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo or the university’s own exam) or acceptance into a preparatory year.
  • A passport and, for some programmes, an online interview.

Private universities also award merit scholarships based on your GPA, so strong grades can bring a 25%, 50% or even 100% tuition discount. See our 100% scholarship in Turkey guide for how these awards work.

Route 2: State Universities With SAT or Other Scores

If you prefer a low-fee state university, you can often apply with an international score instead of YÖS. Commonly accepted alternatives include:

Exam / qualification Often accepted by Notes
SAT Many state universities Minimum total score varies by university and programme
ACT Many state universities Less common than SAT among applicants
IB Diploma Most universities Minimum points set by each university
A-levels Most universities Usually at least two or three subjects required
National entrance exams Selected universities For example, some universities accept certain national exam results

Each university publishes its own list and minimum scores every year; always check the current call for international applicants.

State universities also have the Türkiye Bursları route, which is fully funded and does not require YÖS. Read our fully funded scholarships in Turkey guide for details.

Which Programmes Can You Study Without YÖS?

Almost any field is available at private universities without YÖS: engineering, computer science, business, psychology, architecture, nursing, physiotherapy and more. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are also open at many private universities, but they require higher grades and fill their quotas quickly. Compare costs by programme in our tuition fees in Turkey guide.

Documents You Will Need

  • Passport (valid for at least the first year of study).
  • High school diploma and transcript, translated into Turkish or English and notarised if requested.
  • Exam score report (SAT, IB, A-level and so on) if you apply to a state university.
  • English or Turkish proficiency certificate, if you have one.
  • Passport-size photos.
  • After admission: a diploma equivalence certificate (denklik) from the Turkish Ministry of National Education, needed for final registration.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply Without YÖS

  1. Choose your field and budget. Decide between private and state universities.
  2. Shortlist universities that accept your diploma or exam score.
  3. Prepare and translate documents early, ideally in autumn 2026.
  4. Apply online as soon as international admissions open; private universities often accept applications on a rolling basis.
  5. Receive your acceptance letter and scholarship decision, then pay the deposit to secure your place.
  6. Apply for your student visa and plan your arrival. Our Turkey student visa guide explains the next steps.
Tip: apply to two or three universities at the same time. Scholarship quotas are limited, and comparing offers often gives you a better final price.

Private vs State Universities Without YÖS: How to Choose

Both routes lead to a recognised Turkish degree, but they suit different students. Use this comparison to decide where to focus your applications if you want to study in Turkey without YÖS:

Factor Private universities State universities
Main admission basis High school diploma and GPA Accepted international exam scores (such as SAT)
Tuition Higher, often with merit discounts Usually much lower
Competition for places Moderate High, with limited international quotas
Speed of decision Often within days or weeks Fixed application calendar
English-taught options Wide choice More limited, varies by university

If budget is your main concern and you have a strong exam score, apply to state universities as well. If you need certainty and a fast decision, private universities are usually the safer route. Many students apply to both and decide once the offers arrive. Our list of the cheapest universities in Turkey can help you compare fees.

Common Mistakes When Applying Without YÖS

  • Assuming every programme accepts a diploma alone. Competitive programmes such as medicine may set higher grade thresholds or ask for an interview.
  • Missing state university calendars. State universities open applications once or twice a year, and late files are not accepted.
  • Sending untranslated documents. Diplomas and transcripts usually need official translations, and some universities ask for notarised copies.
  • Paying a deposit before checking the programme. Confirm the language of instruction, accreditation and refund policy first.

What Happens After You Receive Your Acceptance Letter

Once you hold an acceptance letter, the next steps are practical. Pay the tuition deposit if required, then apply for a student visa at the Turkish consulate in your country, unless your nationality allows visa-free entry. After arrival you register at the university, and within the legal time limit you apply for a student residence permit through e-ikamet. Some students also need to complete diploma equivalence in Turkey, so check whether your university asks for it. Immigration rules change, so confirm current requirements with official sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I study medicine in Turkey without YÖS?

Yes, at many private universities, which admit medicine applicants based on high school grades (especially biology and chemistry) and English level. Top state universities usually require a strong exam score.

Is admission without YÖS less valuable?

No. Your degree is the same regardless of the admission route. What matters is that the university is accredited and the programme is recognised in the country where you plan to work.

Can I get a scholarship without YÖS?

Yes. Private universities give merit scholarships based on your GPA, and Türkiye Bursları does not require YÖS either.

What GPA do I need?

It depends on the university and programme. Many private universities accept moderate grades for most programmes, while medicine, dentistry and pharmacy require high grades. We can check your exact chances in a free consultation.

Do I need YÖS for a master’s degree in Turkey?

No. YÖS is only used for undergraduate admission. Master’s and PhD applications are based on your bachelor’s degree, transcripts and language proof, and some programmes also ask for ALES, GRE or GMAT scores.

Can I transfer from a private university to a state university later?

Transfers between universities are possible in some cases, but they depend on your grades, the receiving university’s rules and the number of places available. They are never guaranteed, so choose the university you would be happy to graduate from.
