It is also the test most students underestimate. We regularly meet applicants who have used apps for a year, book HSK 4 a month before their scholarship deadline and discover that the reading section alone takes them twice the allotted time

This guide explains how the HSK works, what changed with the new HSK 3.0, which level you need for university, how to register and how long preparation really takes. The exam is run by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and its test arm, Chinese Testing International, and the official source for dates and rules is chinesetest.cn

At a glance: HSK stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, the standard Chinese proficiency test • Most bachelor’s programs ask for HSK 4, master’s often HSK 4 or 5 • Score reports are generally accepted for two years • Paper-based and internet-based versions run at test centres worldwide

What is the HSK exam?

The HSK is a standardised test of Mandarin Chinese for non-native speakers, a bit like IELTS or TOEFL for English. Universities in China use it for admission, the Chinese Government Scholarship uses it to decide whether you need a preparatory year, and some employers use it when hiring foreigners. It tests simplified Chinese characters only, so students who learned traditional characters in Taiwan or Hong Kong need to adjust

The HSK is a written test. Speaking is assessed separately through the HSKK, which has elementary, intermediate and advanced levels. Some universities want both, particularly for Chinese language and literature or teaching programs, so check before you book

A typical paper-based test room. HSK centres also run computer-based sittings

HSK levels explained

For years the HSK had six levels. The version most students still sit, often called HSK 2.0, works like this. Levels 1 and 2 are scored out of 200 with a pass mark of 120, while levels 3 to 6 are scored out of 300 with a pass mark of 180. Universities often ask for a minimum total score on top of simply passing, for example HSK 4 with at least 180 or 210

Level

Approx. vocabulary (HSK 2.0)

Typical use

HSK 1

150 words

Very basic phrases

HSK 2

300 words

Simple daily exchanges

HSK 3

600 words

Language course entry, travel and daily life

HSK 4

1,200 words

Most Chinese-taught bachelor’s programs

HSK 5

2,500 words

Many master’s programs, top universities

HSK 6

5,000+ words

Humanities, research, professional work

What changes with HSK 3.0

China has been moving to a new framework known as HSK 3.0, with nine bands grouped into beginner (1 to 3), intermediate (4 to 6) and advanced (7 to 9). HSK 7 to 9 already runs as a single advanced exam. For levels 1 to 6, trial sittings of the new format were held during 2026, and the new version adds translation, handwriting and a speaking component from level 3 upward. The vocabulary lists are much bigger too, with the new band 4 expecting roughly 3,200 words compared with 1,200 in the old HSK 4

What does this mean for a 2027 applicant? Universities have not stopped accepting old-format certificates, and for now an HSK 4 result is treated as HSK 4 regardless of version. Still, if you are starting from zero, study with HSK 3.0 materials, because the old format is being phased out. Confirm which version your test centre offers when you register

Exam format and duration

Each HSK level has listening and reading sections, and from HSK 3 onward a writing section. Higher levels are longer. HSK 4 takes roughly 105 minutes, HSK 5 about 125 minutes and HSK 6 around 140 minutes. Listening is played once only, which catches out many students used to replaying audio in apps

Listening: short dialogues and longer passages with multiple-choice answers

Reading: filling gaps, ordering sentences and answering questions on passages

Writing: building sentences from given words at HSK 4, short essays at HSK 5, and summarising a long text at HSK 6

You can choose between paper-based and internet-based tests where both are available. The internet-based version is taken on a computer at a test centre, and you type characters using pinyin input, which is a big advantage if your handwriting is slow. Results for the computer test usually come out faster, in around two weeks

Which HSK level do universities require?

For Chinese-taught bachelor’s programs the usual minimum is HSK 4, sometimes with a score of 180 or more. Peking, Tsinghua and Fudan typically ask for HSK 5 or 6 for undergraduate humanities and social sciences. Master’s programs normally ask for HSK 4 to 5 depending on the field, and medicine taught in Chinese often wants HSK 5. If you are looking at the top-ranked Chinese universities, plan for HSK 5 at least

English-taught programs do not require HSK, although some ask for HSK 2 or 3 before graduation or include Chinese classes in the curriculum. For those programs, read our guide to Chinese scholarships without IELTS to see which English certificates are accepted instead

HSK and the CSC scholarship

The Chinese Government Scholarship gives students without the required HSK level a one-year Chinese preparatory program before the degree, but at the end of that year you must pass the HSK level your university sets, usually HSK 4. Students who fail can lose the scholarship. Our CSC scholarship guide explains how this works for each degree level

Book your HSK at least three months before your earliest application deadline. Paper-based results can take a month, and if you miss the score you need, you want time for one more attempt

Registration, fees and results

Registration is done online through the Chinese Testing International website, where you create an account, choose a test centre, upload a photo and pay. Most countries have several sittings a year, often monthly at larger centres such as Confucius Institutes and universities. Registration usually closes about a month before paper tests and around ten days before internet-based tests

Fees are set locally, so they vary by country and level. As a rough guide, lower levels cost the equivalent of about 20 to 40 US dollars and HSK 5 or 6 can reach 80 to 120 US dollars. Check the exact amount on your test centre’s page before budgeting

Results appear online and you can download an electronic score report. Universities generally accept HSK scores taken within the previous two years, so a certificate from 2024 may not work for a 2027 application

Need help planning your HSK and university application?

Our advisers can match your current Chinese level to realistic universities, plan your test dates around scholarship deadlines and review your application file. With classes and daily practice, a complete beginner usually reaches HSK 3 in about six to eight months and HSK 4 in roughly a year. Moving from HSK 4 to HSK 5 often takes another year, because the vocabulary doubles and reading speed becomes the problem. Students living in China and studying full-time move faster

Learn the official word list for your target level and review it with spaced repetition

Take a full timed mock test every two weeks from the second month

Practise listening without pausing or replaying

Write by hand if you are taking the paper test, and type in pinyin if you are taking the computer version

Read graded readers to build speed, since the reading section is where most marks are lost

A common mistake we see is students choosing the level that matches their app streak rather than their real ability. Take a mock test first. If you score below 150 on a 300-point practice paper, book the level below

Your next step

Decide which universities you are targeting, find their HSK minimum, and work back from the deadline to choose a test date. Then register, buy the official mock tests and start timing yourself

Frequently Asked Questions

What HSK level do I need to study in China?

Most Chinese-taught bachelor’s programs require HSK 4, and many master’s programs ask for HSK 4 or 5. Top universities and humanities subjects often want HSK 5 or 6. English-taught programs do not require HSK

How long is an HSK certificate valid?

Universities and the CSC generally accept HSK score reports for two years from the test date. After that you will usually need to take the exam again

Can I take the HSK exam online at home?

Home editions were offered for some levels in recent years, but availability changes. Most students now take the internet-based test at an official test centre, so check current options on chinesetest.cn

Is HSK 4 enough for university?

For many bachelor’s programs, yes. In practice HSK 4 students often struggle in lectures during the first semester, so keep studying after you are admitted

What is the difference between HSK and HSKK?

The HSK tests listening, reading and writing, while the HSKK is a separate speaking test. Some universities and scholarships ask for both, especially for language and teaching programs

Related guides

Cost of Living in China for Students

MBBS in China with Scholarship 2027

Study Abroad Without IELTS in 2027

Everything about the HSK exam for 2027 applicants: the six levels and HSK 3.0, exam format, fees, registration and the HSK level Chinese universities require.

[48

post-13008","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-study-abroad
["GET
